Am 1. Juni zeigte der deutsch-französische Kooperationssender Arte eine 90-minütige Dokumentation über die 1968 gegründete Reformuniversität Vincennes (heute: Universität Paris VIII). Unter dem Titel "Vincennes – Die revolutionäre Uni" (Frankreich 2016) beleuchtet dieser Film ein wichtiges Kapitel französischer Intellektuellengeschichte und portraitiert jenes linksalternative Milieu, in dem sich neben Foucault auch Gilles Deleuze, Jean-François Lyotard, Jacques Lacan, Jacques Rancière, Noam Chomsky, Pierre Paolo Pasolini und Herbert Marcuse als Professoren und Dozenten engagierten.

As previously announced, the interview was conducted by Ruben Hackler and Guido Kirsten in Zurich this march, following a workshop with the renowned literary scholar at the center "History of Knowledge." The contribution is part of our series on "Distant Reading and Discourse Analysis." In this extensive interview, Moretti talks about his intellectual influences, the development of his controversial concepts, and the question what literary history might contribute to a social critique of the present.

Die beiden Germanisten setzen sich kritisch mit Franco Morettis Arbeit am Literary Lab der Universität Stanford auseinander. Ist sein Verfahren des distant reading mehr als ein Schlagwort im akademischen Theorien-Markt? Ein gescheitertes Projekt zur Analyse von Literatur mittels des Computers? Und was hat dieses Konzept mit einer "Archäologie des Wissens" zu tun? Lassen sich historische Diskurse algorithmisch analysieren? In einem weiteren featured-Beitrag zum Thema "Distant Reading" und "Digital Humanities" vergleicht Maurice Erb Franco Morettis digitalisierte Literaturwissenschaft mit Foucaults Archäologie, um daran anschliessend einen kritischen Blick auf die Vorstellung von einer "automatisierten" Textanalyse zu werfen. Über das Problem der technischen Machbarbeit hinaus wird dabei die grundsätzliche Frage berührt, ob den vielbeschworenen "Algorithmen" überhaupt ein paradigmatisches Innovationspotential für die Geisteswissenschaften zugeschrieben werden kann.

Given the fact, that Franco Moretti and Michel Foucault share a mutual interest in the analysis of 'big data', evolutionary theory as a tool for the study of history, and the image of the Darwinian trees, it seems fruitful to take a Foucauldian look at the theory and practice of Distant Reading. The G+C Blog is very proud to publish a new multimedia issue: Was heißt: Foucault historisieren? This edited volume on the question how to historicize Foucault comprises six substantial papers, four lecture recordings, and a digital slide show. The contributions derive from an international conference organized by the G+C Blog in Zurich in March 2015. The reviewing and editing was done by Maurice Erb, Simon Ganahl, and Cécile Stehrenberger, who also collaboratively wrote the issue's introduction.
