We are happy to share the Call for Papers for the fourth meeting of the Critical Genealogies Workshop which will take place in Richmond VA from October 21 to 22 2022.

The American philosopher Colin Koopman who is co-editor of the G+C Blog has just published an essay on the current relevance of Foucault's concept of power in Aeon. Unlike his predecessors Koopman states Foucault did not claim to reveal the essence of power but rather unfolded "an index to an entire field of analysis in which the work of philosophy must continually toil." Since its launch in spring 2013 the G+C Blog has continuously developed from a typical blog with rather short posts into a reviewed open access journal. This wasn't really our own active decision but the platform happened to take this turn. In the last three years we have published more than forty reviewed open access papers (all with DOIs) organized several international workshops and conferences and edited three special issues. That's why we thought it's time to adjust the design and structure of the G+C Blog accordingly…

This paper introduces a genealogy of a contemporary modality of power operative across finance capital and the security state but most especially the new informatics at work in social media and big data. To move beyond the familiar summative clichés for this latter constellation of practices ('the information age' or 'the internet society') we need to follow Foucauldian genealogy in order to interrogate a political shift in the very nature of power itself. We find ourselves midst a new form of power that originally emerged within the context of biopower but has recently assumed a gravity all its own: infopower.

Until March 19 2015 when our conference "Historicizing Foucault" begins in Zurich we will consecutively publish the abstracts of the accepted presentations. Thanasis Lagios lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Athens will talk about "Foucauldian Genealogy and Maoism" in the panel Foucault and Politics on March 20 2015.

Gibt es so etwas wie "intellektuelle Konstanten" bei Michel Foucault? Gibt es gleichbleibende Standpunkte oder Argumente in diesem schillernden Denken das sich selbst als transformative Übung versteht? An erster Stelle wäre hier auf das sine qua non einer als "unerbittlich" gedachten Historizität zu verweisen gleich danach aber auf ein eng damit zusammenhängendes zweites "Axiom": Foucault akzeptiert kein primordiales oder übergeordnetes Drittes und zwar weder im Sinne einer notwendigen dialektischen Vermittlung noch als spezifisch juridisch oder allgemein symbolisch verstandenes "Gesetz".

Drei Augenpaare blicken auf einen menschlichen Körper der auf einem Operationstisch liegt drei Paare weiss behandschuhter Hände fixieren und bearbeiten ihn mit medizinischen Instrumenten. Die Haut des Patienten ist schwarz. Wie die des einen Arztes. Der andere deutlich ältere Arzt und die Operationsschwester sind weiss. Die Augen des Patienten sind weit aufgerissen. Er blickt zurück: zu den Ärzten zu den Fotographen zu dessen Betrachter_innen. Aufgenommen wurde die Fotographie die ich in meinen Händen halte in den 1940er oder 50er Jahren in der spanischen Kolonie Äquatorialguinea. Kein Schnappschuss sondern eine sorgfältige Inszenierung franquistischer Kolonialpolitik durch ein staatlich finanziertes Fotographenteam.
